Hank Bee's debut EP out now + SUEP on tour!
Wooop
Hey again!

Hank Bee by Alice Lovatt / Salt In My Shoe
SO exited that Hank Bee’s gorgeous EP a sudden hankering is out now - spanning the indie-folk-country-rock spectrum in a thoroughly brilliant way, with lashings of pedal steel, what’s not to love.
The track SFS at the heart of the EP is a particular fave of mine. Hank Bee says it “began as a piano idea in September 2023, inspired by the likes of both Joanna Sternberg and Newsom. It remained entirely instrumental for almost 2 years before I could even muster any lyrics. Humans are great at denial and avoidance, and writing in all forms exposes things you didn’t even realise were there. Whenever I’m struggling with lyrics I believe most of the time it’s because I’m avoiding what it is I truly want to say.”
“It was the opening line that came to me first, and I think it reflects this confusing time in my life well - “morning, come meet me, come seek me, in the shadows. Morning, come taunt me, implore me, to take the risk”. It feels so tempting to run away from your problems that it feels like it would be easier to hide away in the shadows, stay in bed, ignore the things that need your attention and time. Even though you know that obviously is not the answer, nor the key to happiness. The mornings keep coming, the same problems occur, you make a conscious choice to embrace the challenge each day, knowing the risks and uncertainty at play… I struggled to finish SFS because I wasn’t confronting things within myself or how I felt about things happening to me at the time. In hindsight, the song ends up documenting the breakdown of my relationship over the months following that initial percussive piano idea. And in the lyrics I think you can hear my own gradual realisation of this - “Tracing our footsteps, the miss-steps to bring us here” - “Time won’t heal but babe you know I wish it would/could”. Time does not heal everything, at least not in the way you think it can, and sometimes not everything is meant to be fixed. I think SFS is me finally accepting that.”

If anyone is very strongly in love with another service and wants to help me get a Greatest Hits playlist on there too - let me know!
